The Nigeria Police Force is reportedly in a dilemma over its investigation into the alleged infiltration of the National Assembly by Russia’s KGB (Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti), the former Soviet security agency.

Sources indicate that the police had invited Senator Sunday Karimi, representing Kogi West, for interrogation following a petition submitted by his colleague, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central.

The petition, dated March 5, 2025, was filed while Akpoti-Uduaghan is serving a six-month suspension from the Senate. In it, she urged the police to investigate Karimi’s claim that KGB operatives had infiltrated the National Assembly, posing a threat to Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

She specifically referenced a report titled “KGB Agent Group Warns Senate: A Call for Vigilance Amidst Threats to Democracy,” which Karimi allegedly shared in the official WhatsApp group of the 10th Senate on February 23, 2025. The suspended lawmaker warned that such a claim should not be taken lightly, stating, “No nation can afford to ignore the presence of such a group within its legislative body.”

However, sources at the Force Headquarters revealed that while Karimi honored the police invitation on Monday and provided what was described as “useful disclosures,” the investigation has hit a snag as Akpoti-Uduaghan has distanced herself from the petition.

A senior police source disclosed that efforts to get her to appear before investigators have been futile.

“We reached out to her after our session with Senator Karimi because we needed her input. However, she has continued to ignore our invitation,” the source said.

The police expressed concern over her sudden disinterest in the case, describing it as “disturbing.”

“Her excuse was that she is outside the country, but a viral video of her visiting her constituency contradicts that claim. It is difficult to reconcile her statement with the available evidence,” the source added.

The police, however, indicated that they would not allow themselves to be drawn into political intrigues within the Senate.

“We do not want to meddle in Senate politics, but it would be scandalous for her to use the police as a tool against her colleagues,” the source stated.

Asked about the next steps, the official hinted that the petition might be dismissed as frivolous, with a final decision expected from top police authorities.
